What are the general rules for hanging a chandelier?

  • To find the right width for your chandelier:
You can use the measurement of the room to give you the guidelines for the chandelier diameter that will fit best. Measuring in feet, take the length of the room and add that to the width of the room. The sum of those two numbers will give you the approximate diameter of your chandelier in inches. So let’s say we have a room that is 12’ x 15’. This means that our chandelier should be roughly 27” in diameter to properly fill the space. Another way to measure if using a chandelier over a Dinning table would be to measure the width of your table. A chandelier should be approximately 50% of the width of your table or greater to be in proportion to the space.

  • To find the right height for your chandelier:
In general, a chandelier should hang at about 30” above a table top. If you have high ceilings, then increase the height by 1” for every additional foot you have above 9’. Don’t forget to leave some room for the chain. How much chain you want to see is really up to you. But the taller the chandelier, the less chain you’ll need for hanging it.

  • Do I need a special junction box?
Any chandelier weighing more than 35 lbs. may require a special junction box in your ceiling to ensure the fixture is secure. Electricians should be able to assist you with this.
